In service, we always begin with “why” - it helps to guide our projects and gives us a focus that we can come back to whenever challenges or frustrations arise. The Westborough Service-Learning Initiative began in the belief that every young person is capable of changing the world through service to others. These monumental differences in our world begin with “Why?”
We ask you to begin by creating a personal “Why I Serve” Statement that can help to guide your process with Service and Leadership. Your personal statement can be made up of several words or sentences that you feel are relevant to why you choose to serve others. Keep in mind that this statement can be any length and will look different for each person; the most important thing should be that the content is genuine and authentic to you personally. Here are some guiding questions, and some ideas to get you started:

- What does it feel like to give to someone else? Or know that you positively changed someone’s day?
- How do you feel when someone else goes out of their way to do something kind for you?
- What is a problem in society that you could talk about for hours? Or that makes you angry? Sad?
- What is important for a community? How do communities change and improve?
